High Performance

The human body is a high performance vehicle—then why do we put low grade fuel into it (in the form of unhealthy food and nasty or useless thoughts)?

Nasty thoughts are thoughts which are NOT reflective of who or what we really are. Any thought which is a negative affirmation (such as, “I am no good,” “I can’t do any better,” “My life is useless”) is a “nasty” thought. Negative thoughts keep us bound to our small self (our little ego) and make us miserable and miserly. When we repeat negative thoughts we make ourselves unhappy and unable to give out good energy to our loved ones.

Cheap talk, gossiping, dirty jokes, wrong company, shallow entertainment, and personality-oriented magazines and novels which have no redeeming or mind-expanding effect are a waste of time. Worse than that, these things clog up the engine of our mind.

We have to put good thoughts in our mind and keep it tuned to Consciousness. Then we will have a smooth journey in this life and reach our Destination: the highest state of Supreme Consciousness.

Make the Mind a Sage

“The best investment you can make is to make your mind a sage.”

We invest too much time trying to please our mind and ego. We don’t need to do that. What we need to do is make the mind a sage.

Our mind is whatever we make it by virtue of our thoughts and actions. If our thoughts are about ‘poor little me’ or ‘big important me’, and our actions are all about making our small self feel happy or our false ego feel important, our mind is going to be demented and become a demon or demoness.

Most people are suffering from self-induced dementia and cannot remember how to be really happy and free. By ‘self-induced’ we mean it is the result of the influence of the small self ego over the mind. Because we are in our ego we don’t practice the basics, which is why we are basically messed up.

“Either you can be happy or you can be in your ego.”

The mind cannot be happy so long as it is dominated by ego, by its false identification with people, places, and things.

“When the identity of the mind with the body and senses is removed, the mind becomes liberated, calm, and serene.” Sage Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Chapter 4, Sutra 26

The only way to break the false identification is to deliberately direct the mind to the study and application of Wisdom. The more good impressions the mind retains the easier it will be to restrain. For example, the mind has the tendency to run out the mouth. If we revolve the mind around inspiring thoughts like. . . .

“Inspire yourself. Do not condemn or pamper yourself.”

“Self-improvement is as necessary as breathing.”

“Taking creates stress, and giving out creates harmony.”

. . . we will be inspired to take charge of our life and make positive changes. It is only by putting inspiration into action that we create a positive momentum of good energy, which will cleanse the mind of past negative impressions, tendencies, and attitudes.

When the mind is purified with wisdom and good action our True Self is manifested. We call such a person ‘god-like’ because he or she is pure like a child but very, very wise. When we make the mind a sage, our mind is no longer a hindrance or threat. That mind becomes an instrument of God, a channel of Supreme Goodness.

The Essence of Divine Love

After the death of the body (and before its birth) there is neither young nor old, big or small, white or black, male or female. Before the creation of this World and after its final dissolution (Mahapralaya) we are all the same Self, we are all immortal souls eternally pervaded by the Supreme Self. We are not boys or girls, men or women, husbands or wives, fathers or mothers, or brothers, sisters, sons or daughters. We are souls. That is all. Everything else is just a temporary role play in a temporary drama called “life.”

When we step off the stage and remove our costumes we have only one relationship—the eternal relationship of the Self with the Supreme Self. While playing this drama of life we should not forget to be our Self, nor should we forget our Supreme Self. But as you know, we certainly do forget, because we get caught up in this life and we get caught up in our role. In other words, due to attachment we seem to forget who and what we really are. This is why Wisdom is so necessary. The mind must be enlightened, otherwise we, as living beings, will remain in Ignorance.

This drama of existence is all about being enlightened. It is not all about being pampered with pleasures, excited with cheap thrills, appreciated, or recognized, honored, adored, or loved by someone playing a temporary role in a temporary drama. We are all the same. We all have the same soul work to do. We all have the same Essence. The desire to be free from ignorance and to know without the least bit of doubt our True Self and our Essence is universal. This desire is the same in all of us. This desire is more manifest in some than in others, but it is this same universal desire to be Absolutely Free that enlivens everything in this universe.

We are energized to explore the depth of our being. This energy manifests as the desire to be Liberated, to be completely free from not knowing our Self and not knowing our Essence. We need to know our Essence. We need to know God. There is no substitute for the Real, for the Incomparable, for That which is One Without a Second.

It is foolish to imagine we are perfect when we still have so far to go. How far do we have to go? We have to go all the way to Eternity, and there is no end to Eternity. So, we should keep working and improving ourselves and our environment, and always remain helpful to those who come in our contact. This should never stop.

We are not helpful to anyone if we are not helpful to ourselves, and we are not helpful to ourselves when we are complacent or get stuck in an image. We should not become “typecast,” even if our role is a spiritual one. Spiritual role plays are also part and parcel of the drama and are not real. If we get caught up in a spiritual role play we will never realize our Essence.

In essence, we are free already. We don’t have to do anything. Our problem is that we think we are doing so much when in fact we do very little. Are we making the Sun shine? Are we making the Earth spin and maintain its orbit around the Sun? So much has been given to us and so many things have been arranged for our welfare and yet we do so many things to mess it up. We think way too much about our small self (ego) and make so much trouble trying to make ourselves happy by accumulating things which can never possibly make us happy.

We create problems for ourselves when we don’t face challenges. It is a challenge to stay out of our ego and mental reactions. It is a challenge to practice contentment and simplicity and not make excuses for our complacency and stupidity. Everyone is born with some negative tendencies but no one needs to make excuses for remaining negative and succumbing to the weaknesses of the mind and body. We choose our fate, and it is never too late to change it.

Our God-given destiny is to reach our final Destination which is known as MOKSHA (Liberation). Our life is the Song of Love, the expression of the divine heart (the core of our being, our own Self). This drama of Life is the Cosmic Dance, the beautiful movement of the mind dancing to the tune of Divine Wisdom. This life is a wonderful journey to Eternity, and every moment of it should be filled with inspiration, gratefulness, and courage.

A wise human being never plays “holy” because a wise human being is whole. No one and nothing can make you any more or less than what you already are. You are an immortal being. You are one without a second. Though we are all the same, each of us is unique. Many people cannot understand this because they think uniqueness is the same as individuality. Individuality is associated with ego, and both are elements of this temporary drama of life. Individuality is a quality of ego, and ego is a mask we wear while playing our role in this drama. On the other hand, “uniqueness” is a characteristic of the Self, of the immortal Soul. Each of us is a unique soul and that uniqueness is immortal just as the soul is immortal. A human being who realizes his or her own immortal nature is a whole human being, a complete human being and has no inclination to play “holy.”

We realize our real nature with the help of divine wisdom. When we realize our real nature (the nature of Atman, soul) we realize we have always been whole and will always be so. We know without the least bit of doubt that we are Real and that the Real can never become unreal, and the unreal can never become Real. Atman (Soul) is immaculate, it is ever pure, ever whole, and ever free. Atman is never impure, never incomplete, and never a slave of the mind, body, or ego. This realization is called enlightenment. When the mind is enlightened with the Wisdom of Consciousness (the Knowledge of the Self) it projects that light all around and perceives that light infused in everything. That Light dispels the darkness of Ignorance and in that Light one remains awake.

This is all a drama, but this drama is beautiful, it is the expression (manifestation) of the Self. When one (as the living Self) is established in the Self and united in consciousness with the Supreme Self, one has truly attained Moksha (Liberation). For this, we do not have to wait until the death of the body or the dissolution of the World. All we need to do is see this drama of Life for what it really is; play our role in it skillfully, with all our heart; and become so dispassionate that we have boundless compassion for one and all (including ourselves) without any attachment. By this expression of our Real Nature we will realize what we are really made of—the Essence of Divine Love.

Create Goodness in the Mind

Create goodness in the mind. Create beautiful vibrations by putting the Wisdom of Consciousness into the motion of energy. Manifest your Real Nature and let the world see who you REALLY are!

Oh Shining Gem of Love, oh pure being, oh immortal soul,
you are here in this human form to manifest the glory of the Supreme Self. So raise your consciousness. Expand your awareness. Look beyond your self and keep going higher and higher.

Don’t get stuck in your images; don’t get bogged down by your mental bias. Don’t lower your standards to please your ego. Leave your small self and open your heart to the Supreme Being.

You are NOT an ordinary being. You are a human being, so humble your ego and purify your mind, and you will realize the Light of Truth.

Now is the time. This time is yours, so don’t waste it in the shallowness of ‘little me.’ Swim in the Ocean of Consciousness and realize your own Eternity. You are the Eternal Self, Indivisible, Indestructible, Immaculate and Invincible.

Do NOT put yourself into a negative frame of mind. Do NOT divide your loyalty between the Real and the unreal. Do NOT destroy your peace of mind by listening to your ego. Do NOT become enslaved and manipulated by your small self.

This is a Drama and you are the producer and director. Choose to be the hero and not the villain. Choose to be happy; don’t choose to be in your ego. Choose to go against the current of your tendencies and set your sails to reach the shores of Eternity.

This life, YOUR life, is as good as you are inside, and as bad as you want to make it. YOU are the maker of your life, the molder of your destiny, the author of your Fate. You have everything it takes to be totally FREE. Take control of your mind and create goodness by vibrating the Wisdom of Consciousness.

True Love

“True love is to be free from the infection of small self ego.”

Dr. T. R. Khanna

Love is not a feeling of the mind. It is not a mental or physical sensation. Neither is it an intellectual or philosophical construction. True love is the destruction of ego. When our ego is completely annihilated, we are established in True Love, and that Love is Truth.

The only thing standing between us and the Truth is our own ego. Our problem has absolutely nothing to do with the ego of the other. “We are the problem, we are the solution.” If we are affected by the ego of the other, it is only because of our own ego infection.

To remove the infection of ego from our mind we need to take the prescription of wisdom daily. It is not a matter of memorizing prayers and doing rituals; it is a matter of daily practice of self-study, keen observation, deep meditative reflection, and mental balance. Along with these mental practices, we must keep our health and fulfill our worldly obligations.

Ego is removed by doing actions without any thought of reward. Whenever we claim credit, or look for credit, for what we have done or for what we are doing, we are feeding our ego. Our ego will live only so long as we keep feeding it.

The whole purpose of studying scriptures and inspirational materials is to remove our ego infection. When our ego infection is removed, we become whole. People who study the scriptures to be become ‘holy’ never become whole. Their dream of Enlightenment never materializes, because they remain stuck in their images and ego. The real meaning of ‘holy’ is pure, absolutely pure. No one is pure so long as they are stuck in their images and ego.

True love is absolutely devoid of all images and ego. True love is absolutely wholesome, because it is absolutely pure. Everyone longs for that True Love, because True Love is our Essence. We will never find true peace until we know our Essence.

No one can live with half a heart; no one can be satisfied with half-Truth; no one can be really happy until they have found their True Love, and that True Love is our own Essence. Peace of mind comes to us automatically when we remove our ego, because when ego is gone True Love is manifested.

When we are established in our Essence, we have discovered True Love. But if we are stuck in our ego and images, we are ignorant of our Real Nature–we do not know True Love.

True Love is timeless. True Love has neither beginning nor end. When the covering of ego is removed from the mind, we awaken to that True Love and realize we have always been in Love; it was only the mind that was confused (by the presence of ego and ignorance). Once the cloud of ignorance is removed, we realize that the Light has always been shining.

Ignorance can only be removed with the Light of Wisdom, with the Light of Truth, with an act of Love. The Light is the manifestation, and that manifestation is in our actions. In truth, ignorance is only removed by an act of Love, which means giving up our ego.

Rising above our ego is NOT something we do just once; giving up our ego is something we have to do everyday. The place to begin is where we are. The time to begin is now. OM

I Am Not the Person You Think I Am

I am not the person you think I am. You are not the person you think you are. Essentially, we are not persons at all. This “personhood” it just a shadow of our ego, and our ego is a mistaken identity.

Our self-awareness is identified with our intellect, mind, and body, and this is a mistaken identity, because in essence, this conglomeration of intellect, mind, and body is NOT what we are, it is only what we appear to be. Appearances can be deceiving.

When we are deceived by our own images, we are in self-delusion. This is the MO (modus operandi, or mode of operation) of mankind. We have everything backwards: we think the unreal is real, the painful is pleasurable, the untruthful is truthful, and the non-self is the self. We need to completely turn around our way of seeing things. When we stop listening to our ego, then we will hear the Sound of OM.

“Hearing the Sound of OM” begins with listening to the sound of silence. The piercing sound of silence will bring our attention to a focal point. Remaining in this one-pointed mindset, we begin to hear the soft, distant rumble of the thunder of OM. We experience this vibration in every molecule of our being. The time will come when the individual mind will disappear and we will experience that the whole Creation is our Being, Cosmic Consciousness is our Mind, and the Sound of OM is our Essence. OM

But for now, we are here, in these human bodies, and we must disentangle ourselves from our attachments. Who or what is attached? Mind is attached to the body, and through the body it is attached to the things of this world. In the other direction (upward), the mind is attached to the intellect. These attachments of the mind are not natural to the mind, that is, they are not inherent but are inherited. The mind inherits these attachments from the ego. It is only due to the presence of ego that these attachments exist.

Ego is the identification of consciousness with that which is inherently unconscious. The mind and body are NOT intrinsically conscious; they are essentially inert matter. Some people will find it very difficult to realize that the mind is simply a very subtle form of matter. Of course, by “matter” we mean PRAKRITI, and we are NOT referring to atoms, or even sub-atomic particles.

Everything has been evolved from Purush and Prakriti. Things that exhibit the quality of Purush (the Conscious element), are said to be “alive’, while those things that exhibit the quality of Prakriti (the Non-conscious element) are said to be inert. But ALL things, whether exhibiting the quality of consciousness or not, are derived from Prakriti and are therefore essentially inert substances. The characteristic of an object exhibiting consciousness is due only to the all-pervading nature of Consciousness, and is NOT the result of a division or multiplication or combination of Consciousness (which is inherently Indivisible, Unchangeable, and One Without A Second). We can say that the object has been fused with consciousness, and this fusion manifests as the state of “being alive.”

In fact, consciousness is ever-present and therefore ever-manifest, and the apparent manifestation that results from the fusion is just that: an appearance only. Not realizing this, a human being becomes confused. Here is a simple principle of Life:

Everything is an illusion. All illusions are allusions. Everything alludes to something that is NOT an illusion, that is REAL, eternal, unchangeable, and indestructible. Failure to trace the illusion to the allusion, and the allusion to the alluded, makes one deluded. To remove confusion, one must see beyond the illusion.

The fusion of Consciousness (Non-matter) with Matter, as in the case of the mind appearing to be a separate conscious entity, is discerned due to PRANA. In other words, because Matter (in this case, the mind-matter) is energized, it appears to be conscious. Similarly, because the body is energized, it appears to be conscious (alive). Elaborated further: because all things in this Universe are energized, they appear to exist. This ENERGY (or PRANA), by which all things appear (and disappear) is also called the Spirit. This Spirit is none other than the SELF, in the state of manifesting its intrinsic Power or Might.

Our mind is an extremely subtle, inert, substance. The impressions recorded in the substance of the mind result in chain reactions, which are directly related to the actions (experiences) that created the impressions. One of the experiences recorded in the mind is the experience that “I am conscious.” This is the first instance of ego in its subtlest form. Next comes the experience, “I am conscious that I am conscious’. This is the first instance of Intellect (Buddhi) in its subtlest form. Next, with the experience of the gross physical elements, and the eventual formation of the gross physical body, the living self (Jivatman: comprised of ego, intellect, mind, and now the body) asserts “I exist.”

As one lives (that is, interacts with this world), one’s experiences go on increasing. When a child is only an infant, the infant child is simply aware (“I exist”). As the child grows, its self-identity becomes more complex, and eventually the living soul experiences “I am this person.” But what is “this person?” This person that we have become is just a shadow of what we were (it is a shadow of the simple ego, “I am”, that’s all). The state of self-consciousness (ego) is an illusion that alludes to the Real Self. Our ego is NOT real; and the personality born from that ego is also NOT real.

The ego-self is simply a mistaken identity of Consciousness with itself (like the identification of oneself with the image in a mirror). This appearance is the result of the union of Spirit (non-Matter) with Matter; Purush with Prakriti. This union is the basis of Avidya (Ignorance), and its dissolution through YOGA is the state of MOKSHA, which means absolute Freedom from Ignorance. OM

Just Be Happy

Sooner or later we have to just be happy, and stop looking for happiness in the things of this world. The things of this world are short-lived, and so is the happiness associated with them.

Just be happy. That’s all. Be content. Be peaceful. It doesn’t cost you anything. You don’t have to go somewhere, or eat something, or see something, or meet somebody. All you need to do is be your Self.

Just be. That’s all we need to do. Everything else will flow naturally from that state of being.

We are unjust to ourselves when we rob ourselves of our peace of mind by chasing after the things of this world. We are always on the run, and that’s why we are run down and run over. We need to slow down the mind, EJECT our ego, and steer our life in the right direction.

The only right direction, the only way to go, is UP. If we are upward bound, and NOT outward bound, we will discover our own inner freedom.

We CANNOT free our self from our mind by following it. Instead, we we have to follow the Wisdom of Consciousness. This wisdom tells us to restrain the mind and senses from distractions. So long as the mind is attracted to the things of this world, that long it remains outward bound.

We are attracted to the shallow things of this world due to force of habit. In other words, we have formed the habit of seeking pleasure in mundane things. We have formed the habit of using the things of this world (people, places, and things) to relieve our boredom and pain. Thus, we are caught up in an endless cycle of pleasure and pain.

We did NOT come into this world to pamper ourselves for 50, 60, or 70 years, and then end up all alone, bed-ridden in a diaper. We came into this world to sing the glory of the Divine, to vibrate the Wisdom of Consciousness, and come face-to-face with our Eternal Friend, the God Lord of the Universe.

We have to face the Truth, because the face of Truth is everywhere (Viswatomukha). We have to live in harmony with our Real Nature and experience our Eternity. We have to STOP glorifying our small self (ego) and take control of our mind and make it our friend. Our mind becomes our friend when we make it a sage, and when we make it a sage, that mind will reveal the secrets of the Universe.

The Truth is hidden from us because we are hiding behind our ego and images. If we break our images, our ego will begin to fade away. When our ego is gone, we are happy.

“Either we can be happy, or we can be in our ego.”

Dr. T.R. Khanna

Non-Violence

Violence is vile and vileness is violent. We are extremely mean to our soul when we live in self-denial and continue to ignore our Real Nature.

We are duty bound to attain our highest potential. ‘Duty bound’ means we are compelled by our higher nature to go beyond our small self, to rise above our false feelings of inadequacy and superiority, and to experience our Essence.

Non-violence is the Law of our Being. When we break that law we punish ourselves with negative feelings, heightened ignorance, and lowered self-esteem.

It is violent to destroy our body with bad habits. It is violent to destroy our mind with bad thoughts. It is violent to waste our energy in our mind games, when we could use that energy to raise our consciousness and spread healing vibrations.

When we resist our selfish tendencies, we create good vibrations that automatically help others overcome their own weaknesses. When we give into our own weaknesses, we also enable others, directly or indirectly. This is too is violence.

Whatever we do, or think, in violation of our Real Nature, is called violence, and that violence invariably causes suffering.

It is not enough to know the difference between right and wrong; we have to do and think what is right. A fool will say there is no difference between right and wrong; or they will say it is just an arbitrary classification made by the mind. This kind of thinking originates out of ego.

When we justify our thoughts and actions to support our pleasure seeking habits, we are in dense ego. We are denying our higher nature (which is to be unselfish, and free of false ego), and in so doing we become extremely ignorant. In other words, we become extremely ignorant by ignoring the inner voice of pure reason and pure truth.

If our reasoning is an extension of our ego, we will never discover the Truth; instead, we will make up our own truth — we will form an image of ourselves in our mind and call that image real. When we cover our mind with half-truth, we are living a lie. Our life is a lie when we deny our Real Nature.

Our real nature (higher nature) is to be compassionate, peaceful, and deep. But when we are attached to our ego and personality, our nature becomes mean, angry, and shallow.

We know what is going on in our own mind. We take our mind with us wherever we go, whether to the pub house or God’s house. One may be living in a temple, or one may climb to the mountain top, but if one lives without wisdom, one’s mind is a ‘combat zone’ of conflict and confusion.

We become confused when we deny ourselves the companionship of the Wise and run after the shallow pleasures and excitements of the mind. Our best friend is the Wisdom of the Wise, because that wisdom leads us to discover our own True Self.

We can hear good advice a hundred times, but if we don’t act upon it, no good will come of it. Goodness follows good action, and good action follows good thought, which leads to more good action and more goodness. When we ignore good thoughts and actions, only violence can follow.

Let us end the violence NOW by putting good thoughts into action. OM

Self-realization

Self-realization is self-actualization. Does this mean that before the Self is actualized it does not actually exist? If this be the case, we could say that the Real is born from the unreal, or that the unreal becomes real; which we could further elaborate on and come to the conclusion that right comes from wrong, good from evil, love from hate, and so on. This is NOT true.

When we say the Self is realized or becomes real, it means the Self becomes manifested, the Truth becomes revealed. When someone really loves another, the love does not come from nowhere or NOTHING, nor does it come from hate; that true love already exists, but becomes manifested. True love is timeless, eternal, beginingless and endless: and if it is not, then it is NOT true Love. Likewise, one can say the same thing about Truth and about one’s own Self.

Our True Self is Immortal. Our True Self is indestructible, beginingless, endless, eternal, indivisible, and formless. When this Self is revealed to the mind one is said to be enlightened. When one does NOT know the Self, one is said to be unenlightened. Both the knowing and unknowing are states of mind.

When a mirror is covered with mud, it cannot reflect the light. When the mind is filled with self-centered thoughts, desires, and misconceptions, it cannot reflect the Light of the Soul.

The Light of the Soul means Pure Awareness; it is Consciousness devoid of mental superimpositions. The mind becomes tainted when we impose our ego. In other words, mental superimpositions are created by our self-will.

Self-will originally manifests as the will to live, and is a natural component of life. Self-will is at the root of the so-called survival instinct, and is present in all living things. We are born with self-will, and

    WE ARE BORN FROM SELF-WILL.

According to the Vedic science, the Soul (ATMAN) is Swayambhu, which means ‘self-created.’ The Self becomes embodied (created as a human being, or other being) by its own free choice.

“We are the sum total of the choices we make.”

Dr. T. R. Khanna

Originally, we ‘exist’ as Pure Consciousness (Soul, ATMAN). The word ‘exist’ is set in single quotes here to convey that its use is NOT as we generally use it. Generally when we say something exists we mean it is perceptible to our mind and senses. However, the Self in its original state is simply Pure Awareness devoid of mind and senses. This is the state of the Self before the Creation (Big Bang), and this same State of Being is the state we experience in the state of deep, dreamless sleep. Of course, it is really not correct to say that we experience it, because in this instance ‘we’ means ourselves in the waking state of consciousness.

The Soul evolves (actually, devolves) from the State of Being and becomes Jivatman, an embodied soul. Initially, its ’embodiment’ is simply the manifestation of its own inherent Energy (Prana, Lifeforce), and in this state the Atman is referred to as the Spirit Self (PURUSH).

The interaction of this Lifeforce with the coexisting PRAKRITI (unmanifested primordial Matter) reveals (brings into manifestation) the Mind (this is the Universal Mind filled with the Wisdom of Consciousness, and is called MAHATATVA).

By the power of this Mind, the heretofore unmanifested primordial Matter becomes manifest in the form of the 5 TANMATRAS (subtle states of matter, beginning with Space, AKASHA), and along with it the Self expresses it awareness of itself (in this state of flux), and this expression is called AHAMKARA (ego).

The ATMAN, now ’embodied’ in this expression of self-consciousness (ego), manifests the power of discernment in the form of Intellect (Buddhi), which discerns the subtle states of matter (Space, Luminosity, Gaseousness, Liquidity, and Solidity). These discernments bring about the formation of the individual mind in which these experiences are recorded. Actually, ALL experiences already exist in a potential state in the Mind (MahaTatva). It is just the presence of ego (AHAMKARA) that causes these experiences to be accentuated and segregated in the shape of the individualized mind.

Along with the formation of the individual mind, the 5 gross ‘elements’ (Space, Fire, Air, Water, and Earth) are crystallized from the 5 subtle states of matter (TANMATRAS). In other words, this visible universe begins to take shape.

The senses are part and parcel of the mind. In other words, the sense of seeing, the sense of hearing, etc., are powers of the mind. These powers, in conjunction with the impressions recorded in the mind, and in conjunction with the energy and intelligence present in gross matter, eventually bring about the formation of the gross physical body.

In the Beginning of this Drama, when the Self first decides to manifest itself (i.e., hide itself in the world of matter), there are no impressions to speak of recorded in the individual mind. Thus, the ATMAN is initially embodied in a microscopic life form, from whence it (Atman) begins its journey of evolution through 8,400,000 different species until it attains birth in a human body. Naturally, during this journey through so many different lives in different forms, all having various natures of their own according to the Laws and mechanics of Nature, the living soul (now embodied as a human being) will have countless impressions (SAMSKARAS) in the mind. Along with these impressions will be associated tendencies (VASANAS), and along with the tendencies, thoughts and attitudes (VRITTIS) will be formed. Together, these will shape the lower nature of a person. However, along with this lower nature, there always exists the nature of one’s original State of Being, as well as the nature of one’s state of being as the Spirit Self, as the possessor of the Universal Mind, as the ego, as the intellect, and so on all the way back down to one’s nature as a body (and lower still, as the nature of earlier life forms).

All of this sets the stage for the Drama of Existence. The living self (Jivatman) strives to realize its Essence. We are driven by our own dual nature to rise above duality and realize our True Self, our Original State of Being. This is the Drama. This is the Game. This is the Divine Sport. This is our life.

We strive for Self-realization because that is why we are here. We are playing ‘hide-and-go-seek’ because . . . THERE IS NO ‘REASON’ FOR IT. This ‘thing’ called ‘living’ is just what we do, because that is what we do. The real meaning of ‘living’ is to become absolutely FREE (from Ignorance and its evolutes).

Self-realization is the realization that WE ARE FREE. This means being ACTUALLY free, not just imagining we are free or intellectualizing that we are free. We must actualize the Self.

The Self realizes the Self by the Self. OM

Compassion, Forgiveness, and Giving

Compassion, forgiveness, and giving, without looking for anything in return. . . this is the way of the Wise, this is the sign of an evolved soul.

There is no better place to practice egolessness than at home. This is why the Creator gave us families, so that we could practice compassion, forgiveness and giving, without looking for anything in return. When we do this, we are doing solid spiritual work; we are discovering what we are really made of. And what is that? That is Divine Love.

Compassion, forgiveness, and giving do NOT come from the mind or ego. These divine qualities are manifested only when we go beyond ourselves. So long as we are wanting something for ‘little me’, that long we remain unhappy, frustrated, aggravated and annoyed.

The most important work that we do is NOT our professional work, it is NOT our ‘body’ work (such as going to the gym), it is NOT our housework (or home improvement), it is our SOUL WORK (Homework): it is the work we do on our inner self which will take us to our Eternity. We need to improve our interactions with our family members, and we do this by practicing self-control. Each of us must control our own mind and ego: no one can do this work for us.

“Good work is its own reward.”

Dr. T. R. Khanna

There is nothing more rewarding than being in the state of egolessness. When there is no thought of small self, I, the mind is at peace. When we stop holding on to our small self, our mind becomes as big as the universe. But when we are small hearted, we feel the limitations of our little mind. Heart is the mind. One who is vast hearted is one whose mind is free of the obstructions of ego and images. To become vast hearted we have to become Wise.

Always, without fail, the one who is truly Wise will be compassionate, forgiving, and giving, without looking for anything in return. Let us make this our mantra for the day:
